– from the legend of Daedalus and Icarus who contrived to escape from Crete by fabricating wings from feathers and wax. Icarus flew too high and the sun melted the wax so that he fall into the sea near Ikaria
David, from our Africa trip back in 1986, flew from England to Samos, then caught the twice weekly ferry to the island of Ikaria to meet us for a couple of weeks sailing. We arrived, after an 8 hour downwind sail from Chios, in to the small port of Evdilos half an hour before the ferry so the timing was perfect. We settled in on the dock and had a very nice greek meal at one of the waterfront tavernas and were rocked to sleep by the gentle swell coming in from the sea.
We have filled up our water tanks and plan to stay another night before moving to our next anchorage – Faros for one night then across of the Fourni group of islands between Ikaria and Samos. The wind seems to funnel through here and it seems our only chance for a visit was for 2 days the following week when there was a lull, then hightail it over to Samos.
