Northern Greece – Khalkidhiki Area

  • Sinthonia Peninsula – Porto Kuofo
  • Sinthonia Peninsula – N. Dhiaporos
  • Sinthonia Peninsula – Sikias

A nine hour motor/sail from Alonnisos saw us tied up at 6pm in Porto Kuofo. This very pretty small fishing harbour provided excellent shelter and here we were also able to buy some fresh vegetables and have a very nice meal out at the Marina Taverna. Excellent grilled sardines and some very nice mussel saganaki dish for John. This was only a quick stop for us as we moved on the following day to the picture perfect area called Diaporos (or Dhiaporos if you are Greek).

The whole Diaporos inlet is quite shallow (anchoring in 3 – 4 metres, crystal clear and quite good snorkelling. We settled in to our first anchorage, beautiful clear water and only a short dinghy ride to shore to buy ice cream – heaven. When having sundowners in the cockpit we were discovered by wasps. I tried a remedy I had read on one of the sailing forums to burn ground coffee. The smell was pretty bad and seemed to deter them only slightly while making us feel quite ill. Eventually we retreated inside. The same happened the next afternoon so we decided to remove ourselves from the situation and re-anchored in another part of the island. Again the wasps came back so we farewelled this idyllic place the following day heading south to shorten our big hop across to Thassos in a couple of days time.

Our next anchorage well south at Sikias was an exciting catch up with our friends Chris and Elaine on S/Y Ginny who we had pizza ashore with, and also had a drink with Soni and Martin on S/Y Reflexion. They have been making their way north from Turkey and we finally crossed paths. Soni and Martin live in Bayview, Sydney and our children went to school together and have a lot of common connections. It’s such a small world.
