The Only Child

Yassas (Greek for hello)!

Kara’s arrived and it’s time to spice this blog up a bit – well that had been my plan!

I’d had some grand ideas about my trip to Greece…. Mimosa’s and sunbaking, floating by day in the Med on a giant Flamingo I would name Felecia, and by night some civilized gyros followed by Ouzo and dancing on the tables at the local bar…

What can I say, life’s been a little different!

Before arriving in Athens I had thought for weeks Mum had exaggerated the heat, I can confirm, she had not! It was hot and sweaty, even arriving in at 2:30am, and it took until at least 5:30am to fall asleep (that was the last time I checked).

The first day I was here we spent doing a bit of sight seeing, and stopped for pastries, coffee and ice cream on the way home. On reflection, it was probably an effort to lull me into a false sense of vacation…

Upon return to the boat a subtle chore was allocated to myself, as the only child. It was to wash the decks of the boat. Not too bad a chore really, to play with the watering hose in 34+ heat. However, Dad being Dad, I soon ended up hanging inside the anchor chamber from my torso, my ribs stopping me from sliding right in. My job – to scoop out the seaweed and random stainless steel washers inside! My sternum was bruised for days, unfortunately no brown bruise appeared so no sympathy was received from my only parents.

Since then, as the only child, I’ve become quite accustomed to the odd chore. Here is some evidence:

Doing the Dishes

Taking Out The Rubbish

Taking the Nana Trolley for a Walk

Checking the Fenders

Installing the Fans

Trying to Fix the Engine

Tonight Dad asked me how I enjoyed being an only child at the moment. I thought carefully about my response and decided that since I was always taught to tell the truth, I shouldn’t stop now. My response was as follows:

“I have been an only child since Michael left in October 2017, it has its perks, however, it was better when he was around because he had to do more of the manly chores. Now it’s not tolerated when I pretend I don’t know what a chisel, angle grinder or a caliper set is, especially considering my career choice, I just have to get it.

I can’t wait for Yasmin to arrive tomorrow so I’m not an only child anymore!!”

The price of free accommodation is not so cheap..

** As I lay in bed tonight I’ve suddenly realized, my room is under the stairs – it’s bigger than a cupboard but it’s still under the stairs… could I be an only child like Harry Potter, and my only parents are actually Muggles??
